How Vancouver Foundation made progress by getting out of the way and supporting nonprofits to do the work.

If you have helped grantees to identify and/or recruit board members, please share what you have done and what you have learned. What worked? What didn’t work as you hoped?

We are considering developing a capacity building initiative to support a cohort of our health and social service grantees who have expressed an interest in developing (or expanding upon existing) billing systems for both public and private insurance. Do any of you have any experience with supporting individual grantees or groups of grantees in developing billing capacity, and if so, would you be willing to share your lessons learned as we explore how best to structure this opportunity?

How listening to the needs of its community inspired a foundation to develop a new capacity building program that supports civic leadership, community collaboration and more equitable outcomes.

The Packard Foundation is currently considering the development of a rapid response capacity building funding mechanism, recognizing that many of our grantees, especially those working on national advocacy, are experiencing new and immediate capacity building needs in the current moment. We are hoping to learn from other funders who may be implementing or considering something similar – specifically on capacity building for leaders, organizations, and networks (not programmatic rapid response). We are aware of and in contact with the Haas Jr Fund and Ford on their efforts. Thanks in advance for any words of wisdom you can share.
