Shifting the Evaluation Paradigm: The Equitable Evaluation Framework™

This publication provides an overview of the impetus for the Equitable Evaluation Framework™ (EEF) and attempts to document early moments and first steps of engagement with U.S. philanthropic institutions — most often their research, evaluation and learning staff — whom we refer to as foundation partners throughout this publication. The themes shared in this publication surfaced through conversations with a group of foundation staff who have been part of the Equitable Evaluation Project, now referred to as the Equitable Evaluation Initiative (EEI), since 2017 as advisors, investment partners and/or practice partners.

GEOList Summary: Grantmaking Manual Re-Write Request

Oak is in the process of several grant-making improvement projects including developing a new grants management system, streamlining the grant-making process, and clarifying due diligence. As these projects are being developed, we would like to bring on a consultant who will help us envision and develop a harmonised and centralised resource that provides comprehensive instructions on how to make a grant. This resource should be simple, organised, easy to find information, and make good use of visuals to aid in understanding the process. Ideally, the consultant would also serve as a thought partner in developing the training of staff to launch the new resource.

GEOList Summary: Promotional Kit for Grantees

Good afternoon! We would like to encourage grantees to include us in their promotional materials for programs/projects/initiatives that we have funded. I’d like it to be a “kit” with various marketing verbiage and tools (like our logo) that we can send via a link to our grantees after a grant cycle, either hosted on a webpage or other “all-in-one” vehicle to make it very easy for them to pull the language or logo they need, with minimal support from our team. Do any other foundations have a promotional kit like this and ask grantees to include their foundation’s name/logo in their marketing and PR? If so, I’d appreciate knowing how you word this to your grantees, what tools you provide, and how you share those tools with grantees.

GEOList Summary: Seeking virtual conferencing consultants/groups

Hello! Can anyone recommend a group that can support virtual conference planning - both program planning and tech support? Or if you know separate groups for each of those functions, that's fine too. Thanks!

GEOList Summary: Excellent Workforce and Early Childhood Examples - Mid-sized Cities

Hello all, The Iowa West Foundation annually conducts a board retreat. We use this event as an opportunity to engage our board in seeing examples of what is working in other communities who are addressing problems we are facing locally. The trips have generated great lessons-learned that have influenced our giving in some very positive ways. This year we are looking for mid-sized cities that are doing innovative work addressing early childhood education and workforce development. We would appreciate any recommendations you have as we start to put together a plan.

    GEOList Summary: Application Period

Hello all, What is the shortest and longest grant-application period for your organizations? Six weeks from date of application to deadline is the shortest application period for us – however I am looking at running one program application for just five weeks. I thought I would ask this universe of colleagues what your application periods look like.

GEOList Summary: Question about corporate volunteerism and dollars for doers

Our company has had a volunteer time off policy for many years, whereby we allow employees to volunteer on work time. Additionally, we have a program where employees can apply for a grant to a nonprofit where they volunteer on their personal time. Volunteer time off – up to one day of paid time off (with leader approval, honor system) Volunteer grant program – minimum 25 hours; $10 per hour up to $500 We are curious about current trends and best practices. If you work for a company that offers either of these programs, please reply to let me know how this program compares to yours. Additionally, if you know of a company that offers either, please let me know the name of the company.

GEOList Summary: Transition support for nonprofit staff/board members

Hello GEO Community, We continue to see an ongoing need for transition support for our grantees at both the staff and board levels. So far, we have been handling as one-off requests but it’s been constant. What are you doing to respond in a fair and equitable manner that meets organizations and boards/staff where they are in the process? How much funding support are you offering and what types of resources or access to coaching have you provided that has worked? We’re looking to create a better process than the one we have now – and want to have some comparison data that allows us to make the case for this type of support as essential for minimizing the disruption that these transitions create for an organization. I appreciate any and all guidance this community can give. With gratitude,

GEOList Summary: Executive Directors serving as Board Members?

Hello GEO Community, We are seeking some sense for how common it is for executive directors to also be board members – in particular at Family Foundations? If anyone would be up for sharing their experience with this and any feedback, that would be super. Thank you!
