Learning in Philanthropy: A Guidebook

When grantmakers focus on learning for improvement, we use evaluation and learning to generate information and insights that will help us better understand both how we’re doing in our work and how to improve. A focus on taking action based on what we learn ensures that we are engaged in strategic or applied learning. This publication serves as an orientation for staff and board members highlighting key concepts, how to get started, and how others in the field are thinking about and addressing important issues around learning. This publication provides a solid basis for thinking and talking about the next steps in your organization’s learning work.

    GEOList Summary: Pediatric Vision Services

I am researching pediatric vision programs that provide diagnostic and corrective services for a private foundation in the KC area. The foundation is primarily interested in programs with school-based delivery. I’m interested in learning about similar programs across the country and any lessons learned from foundations’ investments in those programs.

    GEOList Summary: Structuring matching grants

What requirements do you put on the match? For example, must the funds be from a new donor to qualify, or do you simply look at total contributed income in one year versus the previous year? How do you calculate/verify the amount of qualifying funds raised? For example, do you require final 990s or audited financial statements?

GEOList Summary: Compensation levels for peer reviewers

As the professional fall gets underway, I write with a question about payment of peer reviewers. We are currently examining our practices, and I am curious if there is an implicit consensus about compensation for reading and evaluating grant applications among funders.

GEOList Summary: Rural Quality Improvement Collaboratives for Maternal Care and Infant Health

I am exploring the idea of funding quality improvement collaboratives that focus on maternal care and infant health up to one year of age. I’m tossing around some ideas in my head but I would love to learn from others who have done something similar in a rural context. What were some of the lessons learned? How was the funding opportunity structured given some of the constraints in terms of providers, geographic variations and organizations?
