GEOList Summary: Board Term Limits

Member Posting

Member posting:

Hello GEO friends,

We are exploring the possible reduction in the length of our board director terms. Will you please share how many terms (and years per term) that your directors can serve on your foundation’s board? And do you have a mandatory retirement age?

Thank you for your help!

Our board members are able to serve two 3-year terms, so six years total. We do not have an age limit or retirement age, but we do try to have a range of ages on our board to represent the population across our service area in Missouri.

Please feel free to reach out if you have any additional questions.

We have 3 year terms and members can serve a maximum of 3 terms.  No mandatory retirement age.

Bill Finley, Mat-Su Health Foundation

The Santa Barbara Foundation’s Board terms are three 3-year terms with no mandatory retirement age.

Aniston Breslin, Santa Barbara Foundation

Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation board members can serve up to two three year terms, for a possible 6 years in total. They can be eligible to rejoin the board after one year of non service.  We do not have age limits.

Sherece West, Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation

Our trustees have five-year terms, which can be renewed an unlimited number of times.

Elise Ford, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation

Our Board of Trustees terms are for 4 years. Each Trustee can serve two consecutive terms.  If there is a special need, we have extended a member’s term for the special project. We have also brought back a trustee that served 8 years, after they have had a break in service to the Foundation.

Kimberly M. Cryan, Greater Toledo Community Foundation

At this time, we do not have a term limit or a mandatory retirement age for our Board of Trustees. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns you might have. Thank you.

Liz Frale, RRF Foundation for Aging

Horizon Foundation trustees are appointed to a 4 year term. Trustees are allowed a maximum of 2 terms back-to-back. We haven’t had a trustee max out the 8 years, take a break, and return years later for another term.

Shona here from the Hill Snowdon Foundation.  We are a small family foundation that has a combination of family and non family/community Trustees on our board.  For our Family Trustees we don’t yet have term limits, but when they reach age 75, they go to one year terms and are encouraged to become Emeritus (no vote, but can still participate in committee/board meetings).  Community Trustees can serve up to two three year terms, for a total of six.  We may increased this to two four year terms – TBD.  We are also thinking of starting an ‘Alumni’ or Advisory board for former board members but figuring out what their roles would be etc…  And thinking of adding term limits for Family trustees at some point down the line—I hope this is helpful.

Our board terms are three years and board members can be re-elected to a second term for a total of 6 years. They can be re-elected after a 1 year period but that has been rare in the past 25 years. It was more common in the early years of our foundation.

The Women’s Foundation of Minnesota has 2 three-year terms. It seems to work for us. Good luck as you think about what to do.

Gloria Perez, Women’s Foundation of Minnesota

No retirement age. Members may not serve more than 2 consecutive 3 year terms.  However, they could serve again, after a hiatus from the Board if a seat becomes available.
