The California Health Care Foundation (CHCF) is revisiting how it learns as portfolios play out and is interested to hear from other foundations about the approaches they use. Key questions that CHCF has include:

  • When is the right juncture in a portfolio’s life to pause and reflect?
  • What should the trigger point(s) be for a review to begin? And with what periodicity should reviews be conducted?
  • How should the learning process be structured such that it is thoughtful but not cumbersome to staff?
  • What frameworks are others using?
  • Very practically, what are the tools, templates and steps in the review process employed by other foundations (e.g, required Word or PPT templates that staff must submit as part of the review, etc?) And who is involved in completing the required documentation?
  • Who is involved in the actual review, and how is that review structured?
  • What are the most productive ways to share learnings internally to spark thinking and incorporate reflections into the given work being assessed AND across portfolios?

Join this practical conversation to share how philanthropic organizations are learning midcourse in a portfolio. Share what you are already doing and brainstorm with your peers about new tactics and tools to use moving forward - and how we can all do it better. By the end of this call, we hope to have surfaced varied approaches to midcourse learning that can provide food for thought and, ideally, share the tools and templates we each use so we can all see concrete examples and learn from each other.
