GEO Member Call with Demos: Building Economic and Political Power in Communities of Color
This member call and panel discussion will introduce you to Demos’ Inclusive Democracy Project and its approach to building economic and political power in communities of color through strategic regrants, advocacy, and policy co-creation with Black and brown-led groups.
Event Details
In the wake of a public health crisis fueled by persistent inequities and a national conversation about what truly keeps communities safe, more grantmakers are recognizing the need to directly, and aggressively, fund grassroots movements to advance justice, economic opportunity and democratic participation.
However, even well-intentioned funders committed to transforming philanthropic practices can lack the staffing, deep relationships or infrastructure to move money to the grassroots at a pace and scale consistent with the threats to our democracy.
This member call and panel discussion will introduce you to Demos’ Inclusive Democracy Project and its approach to building economic and political power in communities of color through strategic regrants, advocacy and policy co-creation with Black and brown-led groups.
Some discussion topics may include:
- What are the stakes in this moment? What are the potential consequences of failing to ensure the capacity and sustainability of Black and brown-led community organizations across the country?
- What kinds of support and capacity-building do local and regional groups need most?
- What does it mean to be in reciprocal relationship with grassroots leaders—to not merely trust and follow their lead, but to interrogate power dynamics in funding relationships and intentionally cede power to the people who have the most lived experience?
Start: Wednesday, November 17, 3:00 PM Eastern
